In Belgium, you can modify your car. It’s allowed, but there are rules to be observed and there are a lot of them! The principle is simple: tuning is fine, as long as it doesn't make driving dangerous. There is no question of obstructing the driver’s visibility or installing an element that could injure pedestrians. However, not all changes are regarded in the same way.
Style is easy
Do you want to add a front or rear spoiler? No problem, no documents or checks are needed. Are you dreaming about a new bonnet or exhaust? You will have to take it to be checked at a technical inspection. Please note that any changes will result in the issue of a tuning report, which carries a charge of €8.40.
Under the bonnet modifications are much more strictly regulated. Your car must correspond to its European certificate of conformity. Therefore, no power gain is tolerated, unless it is validated by the manufacturer itself!
Then there is the notoriously thorny issue of lowering. In order for it to be approved, it must be installed by a professional who will provide you with an installation certificate as well as a validation report. But that’s not all: you will need to have everything checked at an authorised technical centre straight away. They will be able to inform you in detail about authorised modifications. Please do not hesitate to contact the technical inspection centre before any tuning work.
Inform yourself and others!
Please also note that any modification will probably lead to the loss of your manufacturer’s warranty. Make sure you also inform your insurer. If they are not aware, you may not be covered in the event of an accident. Before entering the exciting world of tuning, take the time to learn from the professionals. This can protect you against unpleasant surprises...
